This study examines the transformation of Madrasah Aliyah Negeri (MAN) 1 Klaten from a filial class into a leading Islamic senior high school within the dynamics of Indonesian national education policies from 1979 to 2023. The research aims to analyze the institutional transformation of MAN 1 Klaten, the influence of national education policies on its development, and the adaptation strategies implemented by the madrasah in maintaining its Islamic identity amid modernization. This study employs historical research methods, including heuristics, source criticism, interpretation, and historiography. Data were collected from archival documents, ministerial decrees, curriculum documents, interviews, and relevant literature. The analysis uses institutionalization theory to explain the process of legitimacy, integration, and modernization of madrasah within the national education system. The findings reveal that the transformation of MAN 1 Klaten was strongly influenced by the Joint Decree of Three Ministers in 1975 and the National Education System Law of 2003, which strengthened the integration of religious and general education. Institutional changes, curriculum reforms, and educational modernization enabled MAN 1 Klaten to develop into a leading madrasah while maintaining its Islamic identity. This study demonstrates that Islamic educational institutions possess a strong capacity for adaptation and institutional transformation within the framework of national education modernization.
