Abstract

The issue that is the focus of the research is how wayang kulit purwa is used as a medium to convey social messages and criticism of society. This aims to understand the important role of wayang kulit purwa in social communication in Javanese society, especially through analysis of the play Begawan Lomana Mertobat. This research uses recordings of purwa shadow puppet performances from YouTube Ki Warseno Slank (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v= xDOmr37W1Dw&t=679s). The results of this research conclude that the play is used as a medium to convey social messages and criticism of society. A qualitative descriptive approach was used in this research, referring to the theory of symbols as an external manifestation of Begawan Lomana Mertobat. The results of the research show that the presence of the character Begawan Lomana in the play Begawan Lomana Mertobat becomes a symbol of rebellion that disrupts the social order. However, through the ethics of "Sura Dira Jayaningrat Lebur Dening Pangastuti" carried out by Kyai Semar, the true nature and bad intentions of the character Begawan Lomana were revealed. Symbol theory is used to analyze this research. This research concludes that the play Begawan Lomana Mertobat has the power of social criticism which presents a picture of the struggle between anger and virtue which is expressed symbolically through the pasemon narrative by strengthening the characteristics of Begawan Lomana who is angry with the support of 'Islamic' figures who resemble Ustadz Khalid Basalamah and Semar on the other side. others who struggle to uphold virtue, truth and justice.
